My name is Joshua Carter.

I am an educator, performer, and clinician, with a passion for sharing my love of music to the next generation.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from Washburn University in Topeka, KS and a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I also hold a Master of Arts in Teaching from Lenoir-Rhyne University. My primary teachers are David Mills and Mark Norman.

As an educator, I have had the opportunity to teach at all levels of our public school system: Elementary Music, Middle School Band, and High School Band and Chorus. I currently find myself teaching at the Middle School level, and am loving life. Seeing the absolute JOY on a student’s face when they “get it” is what keeps me going every single day.

I’m a Marine Corps Veteran who served with the 2D Marine Aircraft Wing Band in Cherry Point, North Carolina. My primary duty was performing for military and civilian commitments with the ceremonial band, brass quintet, and concert band. The 2D MAW Brass Quintet, The Sound of Freedom, went on tour giving recitals and masterclasses to high school and college students, most notably the University of Minnesota and the University of Michigan. In September of 2017, I had the honor to perform with the Ceremonial Band at Ground Zero in New York City, which is an incredibly powerful memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

In addition to my work with the 2D MAW Band, I have also served as principal tubist for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. I maintain a private studio, frequently teach at the schools in my surrounding area, and am currently on the band staff at West Carteret High School in Morehead City, NC.

Through both teaching and performing, I am able to share my passion for music with the people in and around my community. I learned at an early age that music is a powerful tool that gives people an outlet for emotions that they may be struggling with, or feelings that they simply do not have the words to express. My goal in music is actually pretty simple: to touch the lives of as many people as I can. If, even for a second, I can make an audience member or student think about something in their lives a little differently, or simply feel the Joy that I feel for music, then I have done my job as a performer and teacher.
